Reading Placement Carla is 40 years old, and she lives in Leeds. She has one daughter and one son. She works as a teacher. She is married and her husband’s name is Peter, and he’s a sales manager. At weekends, the family like to go to the local parks or watch films together. They don’t like to play football.

Peter was born in England, but Carla wasn’t. She was born in Greece, and she moved to England when she was 21. When she was growing up, she wasn’t really interested in English. She found English at school very difficult and boring, and when she finished school she couldn’t remember anything. At university, her teachers spoke about how important English was to find a good job. She started to spend a lot of time listening to English songs, watching English TV and films and reading English books.

Carla decided to move to England to improve her level of English after university. During her English course, she got a part-time job in a restaurant. She thought it would be helpful to improve her language level, earn some money and meet new people. At first, she found living in Leeds much more difficult than she expected. She felt homesick, and everything was different in England compared to back home. The food wasn’t good, it was always raining, and she couldn’t understand anyone.

The staff at the language school were very friendly and she made friends with other students. Her level improved quickly. She had to speak English all the time, and she became more confident at speaking. She started to understand more and more English and she joined several speaking clubs around the city centre.

Peter and Carla met at an international student speaking club at the university. Peter was studying Spanish for fun and wanted to help other people learning his native language to practice their speaking skills. When he first went to the speaking club, he never would have imagined that he would end up meeting his future wife! They had similar tastes in music and art, and they both enjoyed tennis. Peter has learned Greek, so he can speak a little to Carla’s family, but he’s far from fluent.

Now settled in Leeds, Carla misses Greece, but she loves living in the UK. She now likes the weather, and even likes English food! The family regularly goes on holiday to Greece, and Peter dreams of buying a house there when they retire. Carla loves her job as a teacher and hopes to become a head teacher one day. If Carla had to do it all again, she wouldn’t change a thing.
